Sparvio introduces the SKS50, a compact 5G signal strength sensor designed for drone-mounted measurement of cellular network performance using an onboard NB-IoT modem.
Key benefits
- Enables fast, flexible mapping of 5G coverage by correlating signal level with GPS location and altitude.
- Complements road-based drive tests by reaching airspace above obstacles and surveying areas vehicles cannot access.
- Supports commercial drone operations by providing the data operators need to assess connectivity for BVLOS and other drone services.
- Integrates with other Sparvio sensors to link signal performance to meteorological conditions for richer analysis.
Core features
- Measures cell-specific metrics: EARFCN and PCI.
- Reports signal parameters: RSRQ, RSRP, RSSI and SNR.
- Uses a Thales Cinterion ENS22 modem connecting via NB-IoT for measurements.
- SMA antenna connector with an omnidirectional whip antenna included.
- Designed for plug-and-play use with the Sparvio system and multiple SKS50 modules can be combined in one setup.
Technical specifications

Sampling and reporting | Updates ~0.4 Hz; default logging 1 Hz
|
Power | Supply 5–15 VDC; Peak 70 mA; Average 15 mA |
Environmental and size | Operating -40ºC to +85ºC; 60 × 30 × 20 mm; 20 g (without antenna) |
Practical notes for operators
- Insert a compatible SIM card before powering the unit to enable NB-IoT connectivity and data reporting.
- Mount the SKS50 on the provided pole fixture to keep the antenna away from structural interference and reduce attenuation.
- Signal readings depend on antenna choice and mounting; nearby structures can attenuate or amplify signal in certain directions.
- LED status gives clear boot and connection feedback including boot sequences, modem initialization, and cell connection states.
